Don't get us wrong, we totally understand why people wear flip flops—they're the simplest shoe silhouette to slip on at the beach or when you're on the go. But let's just call a spade a spade, the rubber sandals are not always the most stylish option out there. That being said, there are iterations that do work for everyday life. The question at hand then is what styles are acceptable—and where and when is it appropriate to step out in them. To help settle the debate, we tapped some of the biggest fashion experts in the industry to spill on whether or not flip flops are okay to wear.

"As a born and bred Southern girl who moved to New York City, I have very conflicting feelings here. On the one hand, flip flops are really the only footwear you can tolerate when it’s hot as the devil, as we say back home. On the other hand, science has decided to ruin our lives by telling us they turn your feet into a veritable petri dish of grossness. These days, I opt for loafers instead." — Jessica Pels, Marie Claire

"Of course it’s acceptable to wear flip-flops, it’s just about finding the most polished version of the casual staple. I love leather pairs like these ones from Ancient Greek Sandals. They’re great for BBQs, road trips, and day-drinking with the homies." — Nikki Ogunnaike, ELLE.com
Ancient Greek Sandals Zenobia Croc-Effect Leather Sandals ($265)
"TBH, I'm not really a flip flop person—unless you're on the beach, at the pool, or you're in a public shower. Stylish slide sandals (loving these from Mango!) serve the same purpose as flip flops and are much sleeker." — Bobby Schuessler, Who What Wear
Proenza Schouler Bead-Embellished Leather Slides ($795)
"Flip flops are great if you are heading to the beach but if you are running around the city, attending a summer event, or just going to brunch with friends, opt for a cool, modern update and try a slide. It is just as practical as a flip flop but it adds an instant cool factor to your wardrobe.” — Lynette Pone McIntyre,StyleWatch
Mansur Gavriel Suade Mules ($395)
"Fancy flip flops bother me—designer ones or ones decorated with rhinestones or little charms. The flip flop is not a fancy shoe and it doesn't want to be a fancy shoe. You might as well bedazzle a plunger." — Charles Manning, Cosmopolitan.com
Zara Slides ($26)
"Flip flops can be super practical. I’ll wear them inside my house in the summer instead of slippers. When I’m out but want an easy shoe, I prefer a leather or sporty slide. Flip flops are a must-have when you're getting a pedicure!" — Ali Pew, InStyle
