Vans DIY Project

Hi friends! Here is part two of our DIY collaboration with Vans Girls! I love the nineties so I decided to create a pair of shoes inspired by all the beautiful parts of that decade! If you've never transferred magazine images to canvas fabric, it's easy! Here's how...

1. Supplies needed: Vans classic canvas shoes, vintage magazine, scissors, water, liquitex and paintbrush. 

2. Cut out designs from the vintage magazine. Keep in mind that the images will be flipped when you transfer them, so avoid letters and words. 

3. Apply a thick coat of liquitex to the image side of the magazine cut outs. 

4. Paste the images face down (adhering them to the shoe) in your desired design. Allow to dry. 

5. Once dry use a spray bottle filled with water to lightly coat the images. 

6. Use your finger to gently rub the paper off, revealing the image underneath. Keep in mind that this process is a bit mess, some of the image may rub off slightly as you remove the paper. 

7. Use another light coat of liquitex to seal your design.

DIY Miu Miu Sneakers

Do you remember the last time you Sharpie-d or embellished a pair of sneakers? For us, it had been far too long so when we saw Miu Miu‘s latest glittery sneakers for fall, we were anxious to bling out our own pair using a pair of classic Vans as our canvas. But honestly, what fun is it unless you can DIY a pair too? Leave a comment and we’ll select a reader, at random, to choose their own pair of DIYable Vans. More details after the jump!

You’ll need:

• a pair of white canvas Vans
• 8 ounces of Mod Podge
• 1.5 ounces of coarse gold glitter
• 1 small and 1 medium flat brush
• assorted rhinestones in settings
• heavy duty adhesive
• small plastic tray
• tape

Start by taping the edges of the shoes, covering the rubber soles. Cover both toes with tape as this is where the rhinestones will be glued on later. (Click images to enlarge)

Add one part course glitter to two parts Mod Podge into a small plastic cup or tray.

Stir the mixture thoroughly with a paintbrush. The consistency should be rather thick but not pasty. Apply a layer of the glitter mixture to the shoe. Allow to dry for 10-15 minutes and add a second and third layer until hardly any white space is showing. Use an exacto knife or the edge of your fingernail to scrape off any glitter that might have dried onto the grommets or soles.

Remove the tape. Using adhesive, glue the rhinestones on the toe in any pattern.

Sport your new Miu Miu inspired glittery sneakers with or without laces!

Kit Supplies:

• Pre-cut/punched PVC template
• 20 cone studs
• Leather adjustable bag strap with gold hardware
• Screwdriver

If you find your PVC template is at all creased during shipping, we advise that you lay it between two towels and carefully iron on the lowest setting. This will remove any lines.

How to:

1. Lay your PVC template on a table. You will see that there are two plastic cut out sections in the middle of the template. These need to be folded up to create a flat surface in between that will be the base or bottom of your bag.

2. Fold the front and back panels of the bag up and across the short tab, making sure to carefully align the holes. You will note that one edge will be showing of the PVC on the sides of the bag, make sure it is the edge closest to the bag of the bag (adjacent to the flap).

3. Push the screw through from the inside of the bag and secure with the cone stud fastening on top, ensuring you fasten all three layers of PVC together.

4. Do both sides as well as the top of the bag, screwing in the studs to secure.

5. Add the loop by folding in half, pushing a screw through and inserting through the hole left on the side. You will need to push the loop and stud combo down between the two pieces of PVC on the top side of the bag.

7. Attach the handle on both sides by clipping the clasps onto the loops. You may need to squeeze the plastic so the handle can attach properly.

8. Add studs to the front flap of the bag.

9. Finally, carefully tighten all screws with the screwdriver, particularly the screw attaching the loop to the bag. This is very important so your bag can handle the stress of daily use and keep its shape.

10. Feel free to customise with extra studs or chain!
